The Nature Conservancy seeks an experienced leader who will accelerate and expand implementation of climate adaptation strategies that use conservation to help both people and nature adapt to the most significant climate change impacts.  As part of the Conservancy’s Global Climate Change Program, the Climate Adaptation Strategy Leader will set measurable goals for how conservation can best contribute to climate adaptation, manage for results, and coordinate organization-wide efforts to demonstrate, scale-up and leverage high-impact outcomes for people and nature.  Addressing climate change is one of four global priorities for The Nature Conservancy. The Global Climate Change Program is charged with leading organizational efforts to achieve positive global impact by coordinating efforts across the Conservancy’s field, science and policy units.

BACKGROUND:
Earth’s climate is changing, putting the plants, animals and natural communities The Nature Conservancy cares about at risk and undermining the vital benefits that nature provides to people. We are already observing changes that pose urgent and serious threats to many of the places the Conservancy protects and to the billions of people who depend on healthy ecosystems for water, food and livelihoods. As climate change continues, the risks to people and to nature grow larger and more severe. Impacts are already hitting coasts and water resources that are of vital importance for both biodiversity and people, and so these are areas for immediate action.

The Conservancy’s conservation mission and commitment to delivering long-term benefits for both people and nature give us a direct stake in developing and implementing adaptation strategies that can sustain people and nature in the face of unavoidable climate impacts. We are committed to developing and implementing science-based, field-tested climate adaptation solutions.  We are poised to build on proven conservation tools like reef-resilience and ecological flows to improve water and food security for people and reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards while also protecting biodiversity.  We are able to coordinate on-the-ground demonstrations around the world, and to share our experience in order to inform public policies, funding and incentives internationally and especially in the U.S.  We have a track record of results-oriented partnerships with both the private and public sector.

Addressing the threat of climate change is one of four global priorities of The Nature Conservancy.  The climate adaptation work complements our efforts to slow climate change and reduce heat-trapping carbon emissions by saving forests, and to advocate for comprehensive climate policies that can avert the most severe climate impacts by significantly reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.  These three prongs of work are led by the Global Climate Change Program that is charged with coordinating efforts across the Conservancy’s field, science and policy units.
