Technology Development & Field Instrumentation Engineer

Based at Bangor, Wales

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed technical development engineer to work with environmental scientists in active research focused experimental instrumentation development and support based at our Bangor site. The primary roles of this post will be to:

  • Manage the electronic instrumentation and mechanical workshop facilities in Bangor;
  • Undertake a risk assessment of all duties proposed, ensure all working practices minimize risks identified and carry out all work following procedures specified;
  • Take responsibility for developing and maintaining a wide range of electronic and mechanical instrumentation at research field sites;
  • Undertake monitoring, preliminary data analysis and interpretation, sanity checking and troubleshooting of instrumentation and sensor output at research field sites;
  • Work with scientists and collaborators to develop new experimental research facilities and scientific instrumentation;
  • Participate in the production of reports and documentation detailing technical developments, and configuration;
  • Create and follow instrumentation standard operating procedures and to define and adhere to operational service level agreements.

Main Duties

The post will be based at CEH's Bangor site. The focus of the role is on supporting environmental research. This includes management of a well equipped electrical and mechanical workshop facility, supporting research by providing maintenance, calibration, documentation of existing sensors and equipment both in the field and at Bangor. Monitor the performance of existing scientific instrumentation, and undertake appropriate remedial action as required. Lead the development and implementation of new technology to support environmental research.

Appropriate training will be provided in a number of areas to assist the appointed engineer to develop cutting edge and transferable research skills to support career progression. These include training in the use of the latest sensor and scientific instrumentation technology, and statistical analysis, and presentation of results at international scientific meetings.

Skills Required

This is a technically demanding role focused on developing infrastructure to support scientific research both in the field and laboratory. Candidates will be expected to have a degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science, and ideally demonstrate extensive practical experience of developing and supporting quantitative scientific work in a University or research environment. Knowledge of renewable energy solutions and remote data logging using telemetry systems would be an advantage, as would experience of working in the field at remote locations. The nature of the post would be ideally suited to someone with an aptitude for solving complex problems, highly organized, self-motivated, and enthusiastic with a high level of attention to detail. 

In addition to technology development and managing the workshop facilities, an important part of the job will be to maintain communications with senior staff and to work around any problems encountered. Therefore, you are required to have good communication skills and the ability to work on your own initiative. You will be working in collaboration with other scientists so will need a flexible attitude, the ability to meet deadlines and a sound teamwork ethic.

Salary

The salary for this post is £26,180 progressing to £29,410 per annum. In addition NERC offer 30 days’ annual leave and 10½ days’ public and privilege holiday per annum.
