Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is the nation's leading advocate for trails and the only national nonprofit organization devoted to converting unused railroad corridors into multi-use trails, creating healthier places for healthier people. RTC advocates at the local, state and national level for policies that support trails and greenways for transportation, recreation, conservation and as an integral part of livable communities. RTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is searching for a Part-Time Staff Writer to assist the Communications team in the production of all RTC communication materials and publications. This position would work approximately 20 hours/week; specific days and hours are flexible.

Job Location:
This position is located in RTC's national office in the West End/Foggy Bottom area of Washington, D.C., and is easily accessible by Metro's Red, Orange and Blue lines.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Producing written material as a staff writer for Rails to Trails, RTC's quarterly membership magazine, including shorter news stories and longer features;
  • Producing written material for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's website and other e-communication tools, including news stories, monthly trail features, blog posts and social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.);
  • Editing of both print and Web materials;
  • Assisting the Director of Communications with other internal and external communications needs, including press releases and outreach/fundraising e-mails;

Supervisory Responsibilities:
None at this time. Reports to the Director of Communications.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, creative writing, marketing, public relations or other related field. At least two years writing experience—print and/or Web—is ideal. Must be familiar with Associated Press Style. Excellent communication and organizational skills, experience with interviewing and research, ability to run with story leads with minimal supervision, and attention to detail are required; published clips are a plus. Teamwork attitude and an ability to work collaboratively with a variety of individuals are vital.


Work Environment:
Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
