My client, a major player in the movement to encourage sustainable development and social progress on the African continent is currently seeking a Principal Environmentalist to join their team in Tunisia.

Under the general supervision of the Director, the duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Participate in the development and review of social and environmental guidelines and policies;
  • Prepare Group participation in international fora for new developments in the field of environment;
  • Prepare environmental and social screening memoranda (ESSM) for project categorization;
  • Take part in the identification and preparation of sectoral projects with potentially significant environmental and social impacts, and which are likely to be categorized I or II;
  • Lead and/or participate in project preparation and appraisal missions to identify, assess and document key environmental issues; utilizing technical background and experience to recommend mitigating measures;
  • Take responsibility for a variety of operational tasks (Project categorization, environmental and social impact assessments, project design, procurement);
  • Initiate, prepare and manage stand-alone environmental projects; this will include, keeping track of the implementation of projects, reviewing tender documents, liaising with the Governments and project implementing agencies on all matters pertaining to such projects;
  • Draft Terms of References for Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) studies and stand-alone environmental studies and ESIA Executive Summaries and prepare and/or review the environmental sections of studies, project preparation and appraisal reports;
  • Initiate policy dialogue with regional member countries (RMCs) on environmental issues with regard to institutional capacity building for environmental management;
  • Mobilize resources to strengthen environmental activities and consultancy services by liaising with Resource Mobilization (ORRU) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
  • Review and evaluate studies and documents from other sectors to ensure mainstreaming of environmental and associated cross-cutting issues;
  • Participate in training programs for the mainstreaming of environmental and associated cross-cutting issues and advise Country Departments on the integration of environmental issues in Country Strategy Papers, policy dialogue with RMCs, etc.
  • Evaluate the implementation of environmental management plans during project supervisions, monitor progress achieved in integrating environmental concerns in Group operations and report on how the borrowers have effectively used Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMP) to mitigate environmental degradation;
  • Work as alternate task manager for projects with substantial environmental components, represent the Group at Environmental and natural resource management seminars and conferences and participate in project portfolio management (procurement, supervision, mid-term review, etc);
  • Provide leadership and guidance to junior staff in the same field and carry out any other official assignment as instructed by the supervisor

Selection Criteria:

  • At least a Master's degree in environmental and natural resource management sciences or related field;
  • Preferably a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in agriculture and rural development sector, including project preparation and management with relevant experience in the formulation and implementation of environment-specific programs and projects in Africa countries;
  • Ability to conceptualize the complex problems of sustainable development and to apply innovative approaches and work methods while remaining efficient;
  • Strong interpersonal relationships and ability to work in a team environment of different cultures and nationalities.
  • Competence in the use of standard software: Word processing, spreadsheet, COSTAB, SAP;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and/or French, with a sound working knowledge of the other language.

Remuneration Package and Benefits:

Salary = €62k - €69k (tax-free) per annum
