Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is a national nonprofit organization advocating healthier lifestyles by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Founded in 1986, RTC is one of the most respected trail advocacy organizations in the nation with more than 100,000 members and supporters. After helping create more than 15,000 miles of rail-trail over the last 23 years, RTC has an ambitious goal for the future: by 2020, 90 percent of Americans will live within three miles of a trail system. RTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Job Location:
The Western Regional Office is located in San Francisco's financial district, just blocks from bustling Market Street and the landmark, pyramid-shaped Transamerica building. Surrounded by professional offices, retail stores, restaurants and galleries, the office is serviced by multiple MUNI lines and the Montgomery Street BART station. Nearby cultural attractions include the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the SF Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of African Diaspora, Yerba Buena Gardens, Sony Metreon and the trendy SOMA (South of Market) neighborhood and Mission District.

Job Description:
RTC is hiring for a part-time, temporary Program Assistant to work with our San Francisco staff on our Healthy Transportation Network project, our Campaign for Active Transportation and our trail-planning activities. This position is for nine to 12 months, approximately 15 hours per week, and begins approximately mid-July 2011. The salary is $15/hour and does not include benefits. The position may be extended depending on funding. Project #1: Healthy Transportation Network
RTC is a partner in a statewide collaborative project called the Healthy Transportation Network (HTN). The purpose of HTN is to provide education and information to improve bicycling and walking safety, and encourage more bicycling and walking for everyday transportation.

The Program Assistant will work directly with the Western Regional Director in the planning of our "Designing for Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety" training workshops, which we conduct in communities around the state to provide them with the tools and strategies they need to create community and urban environments that are walkable and bicycle-friendly. The Program Assistant will coordinate with our local partners and help with logistics and preparation of the agenda, handout materials, evaluations and follow-up.

Project #2: Campaign for Active Transportation
The top policy priority for RTC is our Campaign for Active Transportation, a organization-wide effort to double federal investment in biking, walking and trails. The Program Assistant will work with two of our community partners, Alameda County and San Diego County, in doing outreach and publicity about the Campaign. This work may include obtaining Resolutions of Support from key partners and agencies, assisting with event planning, writing campaign materials, doing presentations to local groups and pitching stories to the media.

Project #3: Trail Planning & Development
We regularly provide trail-planning assistance to communities around the six-state Western Region, and we work on trail encouragement programs through our Urban Pathways Initiative. The Project Assistant will work with our Trail Development Manager on a variety of tasks that may include trail project research and writing, community outreach, event planning and GIS mapping of trail projects.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None; this position will report directly to the Western Regional Director.

Job Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:

• Some experience in transportation planning, environmental policy and/or political organizing and campaign work;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• A lot of enthusiasm, resourcefulness and flexibility to help where needed.

Work Environment:
Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
