Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is a national nonprofit organization advocating for healthier lifestyles by creating a nationwide network of public trails, many from former rail lines and connecting corridors. RTC advocates at the local, state and national level for policies that support trails and greenways for transportation, recreation, conservation and as an integral part of livable communities. Our Campaign for Active Transportation seeks to double federal investment in trails, biking and walking as a step toward making trail systems accessible to virtually all Americans. RTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Job Location:
This position is located in RTC's national office in the West End/Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and is easily accessible by Metro's Red, Orange and Blue lines.

Job Duties:
The Senior Director of Program will be responsible for:

• Assisting the Vice President of Program in managing RTC's Program Department, including:
    o Directly supervising several program staff, who in turn supervise several others;
    o Guiding teams responsible for implementing RTC's Urban Pathways Initiative and strategically deploying grants to local trail development partners; 
    o Identifying strategic program opportunities;
    o Overseeing Program Department budgets and work plans;
    o Serving as a resource for RTC's Executive Team on current program activities.
• Working with staff to provide and ensure high quality technical assistance regarding trail development issues, especially for states not covered by RTC field offices.
• Overseeing of trail development technical assistance contracts.
• Fundraising from foundations, corporations and major donors to support RTC's national and field program work, including:
    o Working with RTC's Development Department to identify prospects;
    o Cultivating relationships with prospects;
    o Working with RTC Program and Development staff, writing grant proposals and progress reports;
    o Special focus on securing of funds to grant to local partners.
• Assisting with communications and event management.
• Other duties as assigned.
 
The successful candidate will spend about 40-50 percent of his/her time on fundraising; 30-40 percent on management and administration; and 20 percent on technical assistance and other direct programmatic activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has three direct reports: Trail Development Director, Policy Outreach Manager and Research Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:

• A minimum of five years experience managing staff in a mission-driven environment;
• Demonstrated experience in raising revenue from foundations and/or corporations; direct experience working for a philanthropic organization is a plus;
• Experience developing and managing budgets;
• Excellent written and oral skills;
• Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills;
• Willingness to travel on occasion;
• At least an undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as planning, transportation, health or economics. A graduate degree in a relevant field is preferred.

Work Environment:
Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
